Can a Mini be made quieter?

Postby Mini Bob on Wed Sep 09, 2009 8:23 pm

Guys;
I love my Mini more then any other car I have ever owned. Only complaint about it is that it would be nice if you could here yourself think in it. With out a doubt it is the noisy est car I have ever driven. I have spoke to others and have thought about applying pickup truck bed liner as a noise supresent. Does anyone have any ideas of what works. I'm opened to sugestions. Would be nice if the exhaust could be heard over the engine. HELP.

The closer to stock under the bonnet the quiter. Stock airbox instead of a an open filter, stock cast exhaust manifold instead of headers, etc. Do you have any type of padding on the firewall behind the gauge area? I had to add that to mine and also put some more padding behind the dash panels inside the car. Mini suppliers carry panels that can be glued to the inside of the bonnet to help there. You can apply some stick on type of sounder deadner material such as "Dynamat" or "FatMat" to the inside of the body panels to help. You do not need to cover the whole area, just maybe 20% coverage will help quite the drumming effect of the panel metal. I did this inside the doors, under the rear side windows underneath the trim panel, on the inside of the firewall from under the dash shelf to the floor area, etc. Some folks have gone so far as the cover just about the whole inside of their cars this way. There is even spray on material that can be painted over that does the same thing, "Lizardskin" is one. Seal any un-needed holes from the cabin to the engine area with silicone. The bed liner material you asked about has also been done before. Just be aware that it is VERY hard to remove for repairs or modifications and it can really add some weight to the car. Little cheap things can be done that will really make a difference. Have fun and enjoy your car.

Gracious, MiniBob!

Why would you want to quiet your Mini? ;) I'm reminded of Peter Morgan's famous response when asked whether a radio was available for a Morgan +4...."What on earth do you need that for, when you have the exhaust note?"
